I have also heard that some popular piano sheet music has chords written above the right hand part, (speaking of which how is this different from classical piano and or jazz?)

Also I heard that essentially guitar TABS allow people to play guitar w/o even really knowing how to read music.

Then how can you REALLY learn to read music? Do some guitar players try to get into jazz piano playing as a result? Or do they need to be classically trained in both to fully understand. Someone told me I should ask in the Jazz section and my question has taken a life of it’s own so let me know if its at all confusing…originally I was going to ask if there is anything similar to guitar tab in piano playing, I wasn’t even thinking of specifics like classic or Jazz.

I DO agree that it’s important to learn to read music. So again, is there a difference between guitar tab (or chords) and piano chords?

Thanks a ton!
I also read that Fiona Apple learned to play piano by by buying sheet music and translating the guitar tablature into notes, does that mean that she couldn’t really read music (I do know she eventually took formal lessons so…)

just check out my previous questions if you like to see what I mean. Thanks!

One Response to “Is there a difference between guitar tab and piano chords?”

  1. Gravity says:

there is a huge difference between tabs and chords. They look entirely different. Reading music requires study while any person can learn to read tabs within hours.

Jazz music is very complex that requires a good knowledge of music theory. In my opinion, jazz is the most musically challenging genre to play along with classical.
