Remarkable rendition of a jazz standard by young piano prodigy Georgie Dave. This version was developed by Professor Doug McKenzie. After 2 1/2 years of music instruction at a college in his hometown, Georgie shows his unusual talent in a studio jazz session accompanied by professional musicians: bass by Edwin Proaño (his ensemble professor), and drums byFidel Vargas (professional drummer).
My Romance – jazz piano Lesson. This is another re-cycled midi file done some time ago. After the solo first chorus, I tried to get the ‘collective improvisation’ feel with bass, drums and piano responding to each other – even though I was playing all parts – this involving re-recording each part several times. I was hoping for a High Definition video here, as it is difficult to read the notation without it. There is a high quality video free to download at www.bushgrafts.com On my video – http there is a printable copy of the notation and the bass and drums backing track.
I have updated this recently with a version with comments and notation at au.youtube.com Go to web.newsguy.com for a version with comments embedded with the video. Also there are other videos, midi files and mp3s. This was recorded using my still digital camera – audio was recorded first as midi, then added as audio to the video using Windows Movie Maker. Bass and Drums were pre-sequenced and the improvised piano was filmed live over the Bass and Drums. The midi file of this and many others is at home.wanadoo.nl
Ifyou have a fast connection and want to see this in high quality video to see the notes clearly (and improved audio), add the letters &fmt=18 straight after the existing internet address line above. ‘Gone With The Wind – jazz piano lesson A much better quality video is at web.newsguy.com along with a PDF file of the Transcription and the midi file (if you want to try to do this yourself!). I took a midi file I had created, IMPORTED it into ‘Band in a Box’ as a midi file. The notation and piano views were captured using a screen capture program. I have previously done a lot of annotated midi files, home.wanadoo.nl and because it is quite easy to ‘re-cycle’ them in this video form, I thought that I would convert a few of them into the video format
This was improvised from the basic leadsheet – in the usual key of Db. Because it is such a popular solo piano piece (I guess ever since Art Tatum’s version(s) were recorded) I tried to cobble together as many different ideas as I could think of as I played. The result is a bit of a mish-mash perhaps, but my idea was to provide a lot of options for those who play this often played jazz standard on piano. For another excellent Youtube version to study, try Alfonso’s that is in the same key – www.youtube.com And of course there is the Oscar peterson version also in Db. As with all of my other videos, the video and a midi file recorded at the same time can be downloaded free from my website – www.bushgrafts.com and the printable transcription is now on my DVD – details on my website.
A great tune by Burton Lane that I had not played for a long time. With this, I just set up the camera and recorder and more or less practised the song by playing it a number of times. The result is less than perfect, but offers a number of different techniques and approaches. I added the scrolling leadsheet later as I could not easily produce a full transcription as I usually do if I had used a digital piano. This along with the annotations I have added might be of interest to other jazz piano players. When I recorded it, I just had a leadsheet in C so I was practising the transposition up a minor 3rd to Eb without a sheet also – you will notice some of the slight hesitations as I play. I really like the sound of the up or down a minor third transposition. I suppose Bill Evans’ version of ‘The Days of Wine and Roses’ where he alternates between F and Ab for the first and last 16 bars is the model. You can download the video from my Website at www.bushgrafts.com

‘Autumn In New York’ – solo jazz piano tutorial. This was recorded on my acoustic baby grand, so I have not been able to easily produce the notation – I have been able however, to add the melody and chords that I used – and I have added annotations. For an excellent and different version of this song by Tom (7notemode) go to www.youtube.com The video can be uploaded from my website at www.bushgrafts.com
I recorded this today on my new(ish) Kawai baby grand. Unfortunately, I can’t give you the usual transcription with this one as it was not recorded on a digital piano which records the performance as midi data that can make a transcription much easier to produce. I have however, added a melody and chord view that may help any interested jazz piano students understand what is being played. And I have also added a few comments/annotations. The video can be downloaded from my website at www.bushgrafts.com
‘Hymn To Freedom’ – (Oscar Peterson) – jazz/gospel piano lesson. I have since found that there is a transcription of one of Oscar’s versions. Those who are looking for a fairly simple one to play could perhaps play the first piano-only chorus of this. This was improvised from a basic leadsheet with chords and melody. This leadsheet, and a full printable transcription are on my DVD – for over 9 hours of video and over 140 transcriptions www.bushgrafts.com
