Jazz piano tutorial – improvisation on A Foggy Day

A jazz piano improvisation tutorial based on A Foggy Day (chord progression below!), by George Gershwin. In this tutorial I look at basic jazz piano techniques such as creating complex chords, developing right hand runs and the different types of bass part and left hand you can use. My view of jazz piano and piano improvisation in general is that although it isn’t necessarily easy, it’s not some sort of God-given gift: you can learn the basics fairly easily, and after that it’s just a case of doing as much practice as you can to become fluent. It’s also really important to develop your own style: my approach to piano is quite blues oriented, and that’s really reflected in the way I play jazz, which is closer to mainstream and swing styles than to more contemporary “cool” styles. If you have any questions on this particular improvisation, or any other aspect of jazz piano, feel free to ask. By the way, here’s the chord progression so you can get straight to the keyboard and start improvising for yourself: F | Ebm | Gm7 | C | F | Abm7 | Gm7 | C | F | F7 | Bb | Bbm | F | D7 | Gm7 | C | F | Ebm | Gm7 | C | F | Abm7 | Gm7 | C | F | F7 | Bb | Bbm | F | Gm7 | F | Gm7 | Dm7 | G | Gm7 | C … One thing I don’t really mention in the video is that this is a pretty interesting chord progression to improvise on. There’s a reasonable amount of repetitition, and it’s in a reasonably easy key for pianists (F major). At the same time there are some really interesting chords that you can

Jazz Piano Lesson For BEGINNERS – Diminished 7th Chords

Diminished 7th Chords are fantastic. But, you need other chords in a song besides Diminished 7th chords. The thing about diminished 7th chords is that you can play any key in your right hand and it is going to sound great. You can’t go wrong. This is one of the secrets of playing jazz. Jazz musicians improvise…they just cut loose and play all kinds of notes….and somehow those notes blend with the song. Well, they are going off on a musical JOURNEY because they are playing their improvisations many times against the background of a DIMINISHED 7TH CHORD. There are other chords that you need to learn also like a minor 7th with a flatted 5th. To learn more about playing jazz piano and playing piano patterns check out my website: www.mypianoworld.com

The Basics of Learning How to Play Jazz Piano

Learning how to play jazz piano is part of the more the advanced portion of piano lessons. It requires that you have learned and mastered the basics of playing a keyboard.

As with most types of piano music, it is essential that you understand the basic notes, chords and hand placement for you to begin to understand how to put jazz chords together. Jazz is a fantastic form of music filled with trademark chords, unconventional rhythms, and is filled with emotion and soul.

A jazz piano lesson teaches you the ability to improvise and lets you be creative with these personal and soulful sounds. The right lesson plan early in your piano skills development is important for you to begin learning how to properly play jazz chords.

To begin learning a jazz piano lesson, you first have to understand the specific jazz chords. This requires that you are beyond the basic ability to play triad chords. Jazz notes start in the 6th cord, which are 4 note combinations. Then there is the 7th cord, 3 notes with the 4th being lowered a half step.

You also must be able to play a major 7th cord. When you begin to practice these chords, you will start to hear some of the distinctive sounds of jazz. Once you have mastered these chords you can begin learning how to put them together into a progression, or series of chords.

The most common jazz progression is 1-4-2-5. This means each number is the first note in each chord. Proper finger placement will speed this process up. Jazz is all about improvisation so as you practice these chords it is good to try them out in minor keys too. This will let you get the feel for jazz piano. The next step will then be learning how to add base.

If these steps seem confusing to you, remember that learning the basics step by step is the easiest way to move quickly through your lessons. This is where a quality online teaching program is very helpful in speeding up the learning process.

An online piano learning program like the Rocket Piano system with video tutorials and dynamic learning tools are very easy to follow for beginners.

Rocket Piano, which you can follow from beginner to advanced levels of piano lessons, has additional course materials on specifically learning how to break down and play jazz chords. It really makes learning how to play jazz piano a lot easier.
