i am very good at playing piano but i have never played jazz before. i am auditioning for jazz band at my school next month and was wondering if anyone had some tips. we have to play a prepared solo, a few scales, and an improvised solo. when playing the prepared solo, are there any ways i could make myself stand out, like a special jazz way to play it? also, any tips for the improv are welcome. thanks so much!
Hi, I was just asked if I would be willing to teach piano to a beginner for half an hour each week. I don’t know whether to say yes or no. I have had 10 years of piano, plus theory, technical and scales. I am just wondering what you think. I have experience with smaller kids (siblings , babysitting), and I know how to teach. Also, I play clarinet and jazz piano. I have performed before, (weddings, talent show, performances) this was totally unexpected. I was just wondering what you think! Thanks!
Ok, so my band teacher wants me to do a solo on the piano. But he didn’t give me a solo sheet that says which scales I’m supposed to base it on. Doesn’t even tell me which song. He just told me to play chords with the left hand and make up a solo in B Flat Major with the right hand. is he right?
or should I look at the top of the measure that says a key like C Dim. 7 or E Flat Major.
or should I look at the key of the song and use that??
And what if there isn’t any left-hand accompaniment during the solo section??
PLEASE SOMEBODY HELP ME. I’M REALLY FREAKING OUT RITE NOW.

I’ve been playing Piano since I was 6, and now I’m 16. Despite having stopped for a few years, I currently play at a 9-10 (RCM) level.
The problem is, after I moved away from Canada, I discontinued testing and became sort of a "play whatever I want, whenever I want" sort of guy, I eventually found myself playing jazz piano etc.. etc…
The problem is now I want to pick up my theory again.
(I stopped playing at the RCM after level 5)
How should I go about relearning the ins and outs of chords and scales and everything like that?
I don’t want to find a teacher again.
It would be nice if somebody could provide me with online resources, books, pdfs.
(It would be even awesome-er if I could load this on an eBook to read over the summer break).
A little quick background, I played Baritone/Tube and Piano for 7-8 years through middle school and high school. I was decent and liked music. I learned the classical music style. Through initial college, I was too busy and stopped playing.
During my junior and senor year, I bought a keyboard and played by chord and lead sheet. I got a guitar during my senor year. It’s been about a year, and I’m out of undergrad, and I took a music theory class before I graduated.
Guitar was pretty simple to me to start. All I really had to do was increase my finger strength and agility. I never took a formal lesson, but I want to be better. My friend also introduced me to speech level singing with vowels and scales. I’ve been messing around absolute pitch and relative recognition.
Anyway, I want to get better. I’m taking graduate level class in engineering and have limited amount of time. I want to take lessons, but I don’t know what to take.
I tried to take lesson 2 years ago, but all I got was more classical piano. I like classical, but I want to learn to play by ear. All I got from that teacher was more techniques on classical music with some useful arpeggio. I like music but don’t want it to be a burden.
So what should I look for? I want some contemporary jazz/pop. I haven’t learned the lower frets on guitar. I still have latency between some more difficult chord transitions. I want to learn how to sing a little better and play by ear. Thanks!
I am beginning to learn theory in jazz by taking piano lessons, but right now I really need a cheat sheet or a guide to different chords for the trumpet. I have quite a few to improvise under here so instead of typing them all in it would be great if someone knew of a website I could find the scales that match these chords. i have looked around google but trying to weed out all the guitar tab and chord websites it incredibly hard. Can anyone help me out?
PS
In case someone is generous enough to actually give me the scales for the chords ill write them here anyway.

I am pretty sure this isn’t a blues chart so I cant really use B flat blues for the whole solo but is there a scale i could use over this whole thing?

I play the guitar, viola and sing and I used to take piano. I really have been getting into jazz lately and I want to pick up the piano again. I never really learned jazz on piano though, just guitar. I know chord structure, scales, modes and all of that. My question is, how difficult would it be for me to pick up jazz piano? Should I find a teacher?
